The Project PACI - Professional and Accessible Community Intepreting, a Gateway to Migrant´s Integration, is focused on training of interpreters in the field of community interpreting in lesser diffused language combinations Dutch language and the Central European languages; in particular Czech, Slovak and Polish, which up to now have been lacking relevant higher education. Interpretation of the state administration, police, and justice, social and health care for migrants is an essential tool in the integration process.
A lack of qualified interpreters causes communication in these areas often through a third language, creating communication problems, misunderstandings, which can have crucial impact on the quality of life, safety and the level of integration in the destination country. In order to build up the interpreting competence in field of community interpreting the training is aimed to various kinds of interpretation techniques, such as consecutive, simultaneous, whisper interpretation and letter interpreting.
The project aims to establish a universal model of intensive education in the form of six intellectual ouputs to obtain the theoretical basis and to develop students´ practical skills.
The project aims to create a generally applicable model of intensive training of high quality skills in the field of community, resp. public service interpreting and translation, apart from the language combination and the philological education background of the student of the course. Community/public service interpreting and translation is a concept including interpreting and translation in the context of law, social security and healthcare situations. In these given contexts we would like to focus our didactical and training activities of the project, in the language combinations of the Central European region (Slovak, Czech, Polish) and Dutch, as a pilot project model, also suitable for other language combinations, since until now no such speciliazed model exists.
The given skills and competences should develop open and innovative practices, materials and didactical tools, such as e-learning courses, translation technologies, systems to process terminology, which will be developed in the project language combinations (Dutch vs. Slovak, Czech, Polish). The chosen themes of terminology can easily serve as a model and template for other language combinations. The digital shape of our output assures its maintenance, flexibility in actualisations and an easy access for a broader public as well as people interested in this special kind of education.
The activities of the project are planned to follow the classic didactical trajectory from theory to practice. Through our guest lectures from our partner universities at the different host universities, students gain an overview about the theoretical outcome of community intepreting, they are going to develop further by means of e-learning courses. Followed by aplying their theoretical knowledge in the development and intensive training seminars with interpreting techniques, using language technologies and knowledge management during the summer school. Applying the intellectual outputs in didactical practive makes it possible to evaluate these outputs more thoroughly. The didactical materials are build so as they reflect the real status of community intepreting in reality and give a good view about the real context of community interpreting.
The project, therefore, is innovative especially from a specific developing point of view, regarding the required skills the market asks, applying the most modern language techniques, and developing professional skills within community interpreting.
